Anthony Velasquez Bayside HS Two Perfect Games

By Adam Martini  PSAL Sports Reporter

There’s a saying that nobody’s perfect, but Bayside pitcher Anthony Velazquez has been just that his last two starts. The junior dominated Flushing and John Bowne for back-to-back perfect games, an accomplishment that PSAL officials can’t recall happening ever before.

On April 11, Velazquez needed only 68 pitches to strike out 11 batters over seven innings, as Bayside topped Bowne, 2-0. He followed up that gem with an even more impressive performance. Against Flushing on Tuesday, Velazquez whiffed 16 of 18 batters over six innings; the only other balls hit were come-backers to the mound. The second game was shortened by an inning because of the mercy rule, as Bayside won, 10-0.

So far this season, Velasquez has allowed only four hits in 25 2/3 innings and has struck out 39 against one walk. According to Bayside coach Pat Torney, his success can be attributed to working with pitching coach Matt Retundie, a bayside alumnus who pitched for the Commodores back in the late 80s and went on to pitch at Queens college.

“Matt has helped Anthony change speeds more often and work both sides of the plate,” Torney said. “He’s helped Anthony learn how to pitch.”

Bayside is 6-1 in Queens A East and next plays against Flushing today at Levitt Field. Velasquez is slated to pitch next on Monday at division rival Cardozo. Both games start at 4:00 p.m.
