'The Club' offers inside look at White Sox Reality series will debut Sunday night on MLB Network

A moment occurs in Sunday night's first episode of "The Club," an MLB Network original series premiering at 9 p.m. ET, which symbolizes both the struggles and the special achievements from the game of baseball at the same time.

This instance from the new reality series focused on the daily trials and travails of the White Sox front office as it deals with Sergio Santos and his improbable climb to the Majors. Santos is seated on a couch in manager Ozzie Guillen's office near the end of Spring Training, with pitching coach Don Cooper seated next to him, and general manager Ken Williams and Guillen across the room.

It's time to make final roster cuts, and Santos, who converted from infielder to hard-throwing reliever in the course of just one year, looms as one of the final two or three choices for the last bullpen slot.

"Did I see any fear in you?" asks Williams of Santos.

Santos shakes his head to indicate there was no sense of angst during his first big league camp as a pitcher.

"My dad always instilled in me and my brothers never to be afraid of anything," Santos said.

"You should call your dad and tell him to meet you in Chicago, because you will be pitching for the White Sox," Williams said.

Cooper smiles and pats Santos on the back, while Santos, the D-backs' top pick in the 2002 First-Year Player Draft, immediately becomes emotional.

"Hopefully it comes off pretty well and I don't get made fun of too much," said Santos with a laugh, when asked about "The Club" moment during Chicago's weekend series with the Twins in Minneapolis. "It's something I'll take with me to my grave and always remember, just because so many years of hard work brought me there."

As Santos emotionally talks about how much this moment means to his family, Guillen quickly adds his unique take on the matter.

"When you cry here, don't make me cry in June," said Guillen, evoking laughter from the room.

And thus the spirit of this highly anticipated show becomes readily apparent.

In Jerry Reinsdorf, the White Sox chairman who has overseen seven professional sports championships in Chicago, you have an extremely bright orator with a sharp sense of humor. In Williams, the team's general manager for the past decade and architect of the club that won the 2005 World Series, you have a passionate and eloquent leader.

Then, there's Guillen, an underrated on-field strategist possessing perfect comedic timing. He figures to be the star of this series, but as Guillen told MLB.com on Friday, "The Club" is not a show devoted to the White Sox manager.

"Nobody has to watch the program to see who I am and what I do. It's always there," Guillen said. "Maybe if they don't say it's Ozzie's show, they might not sell it. In the meanwhile, I have my own show every day, and that's enough for me.

"Yesterday I was upset, a couple of days I was upset, because people think it's the Ozzie Guillen show. It's not my show. Day in and day out, it's something about the organization. It's a lot of people involved. I'm less involved in the thing.

"It will be refreshing, a very nice thing to watch. You really have to watch it, because people will know how Kenny, the scouts, the assistant general manager [Rick Hahn] and the [media relations] department work together to put this thing together for the ballclub."

The first of six installments, narrated by actor and devout White Sox fan Michael Clarke Duncan, begins with a late January meeting between Reinsdorf, Williams and Guillen in Chicago and covers the good and bad, the humorous and controversial, all the way through May. Along the way, there is a lunch with Reinsdorf and MLB Commissioner Bud Selig at one of their favorite delis in Arizona, full of entertaining commentary, and tape of the Opening Day speech delivered by Guillen and Williams to the team.

"Prepare to play through October," Williams tells his charges.

"If you are not trying to win a championship for the White Sox, I'm sorry," Williams added. "That's what I do."

Some White Sox players don't seem overly-anxious to see the finished product, being they are living these moments every day. Then, there are cases such as Santos, who said his entire family will be taping Sunday's episode.

"Some are ordering MLB Network to see it," a smiling Santos said.

"At first I was like, I was making my phone calls, saying I had made the team, and they were filming, and it was weird at first," Santos continued. "I don't want to hear them talking to my parents, but now looking back, it's exciting."

There are microphones and television cameras around Guillen every day, waiting on his every humorous, biting word, hoping he says something controversial. But Guillen points out how his involvement isn't any more prominent than Reinsdorf, Williams or the team itself in this inside look.

Yet, with or without the show, the "Hispanic Jackie Mason," as Reinsdorf refers to his manager, is the star.

Fans tuning in get words of wisdom from Guillen such as, "I'll be the first guy to die for this ballclub," or "You not pick your family, but we pick this ballclub, and everybody in this clubhouse right now is a family for the next seven months."

There's also a telling managerial moment when Guillen candidly explains to Jared Mitchell, the team's fleet-footed top pick from the 2009 First-Year Player Draft, not to be afraid to bunt ever, even if he's 0-for-3 in a game.

"That's going to be your game," Guillen tells an attentive Mitchell during a Cactus League contest.

With the White Sox reality in focus for this tale, there doesn't figure to be a dull moment throughout this fifth series produced for MLB Network by MLB Productions.

"We are a lot of things around here," said Williams during an interview segment. "But we could never be described as boring."

By Scott Merkin / MLB.com CHICAGO -- If Major League Baseball is looking for a true Hollywood dream story for its 2010 All-Star Game to be played in Anaheim on Tues., July 13, just a few miles away from Disneyland, then simply focus upon White Sox reliever Sergio Santos.

Yes, Santos has no record over 26 games and has thrown just 21 2/3 innings. Yes, quality setup men are rarely taken for the Midsummer Classic, let alone a pitcher who has spent most of his season in middle relief such as Santos. And yes, a recent rough outing in Pittsburgh elevated Santos' ERA to 2.49.

Nonetheless, the converted infielder working in just his 14th month as a professional pitcher stands as one of the American League's great unsung success stories and as an important cog to the White Sox top-notch bullpen. Fans can't cast their votes for pitchers, though, so White Sox supporters need to focus on helping their deserving position players on the ballot receive recognition such as center fielder Alex Rios and first baseman Paul Konerko.

Rios sits just outside the Top 15 among outfielders in this latest round of online voting released on Monday, while Konerko didn't quite crack the Top 5 at a loaded first base position featuring three players with at least 1,425,000 votes. There's still time for the White Sox faithful to lend a helping hand toward a duo playing a key role in the team's recent 10-1 run over the past 11 games.

Fans can cast their votes for starters up to 25 times at MLB.com and all 30 club sites using the 2010 All-Star Game MLB.com Ballot sponsored by Sprint until July 1 at 10:59 p.m. CT. Sprint subscribers can now vote on the go with select Sprint devices. They can learn more about how to vote on their smart phones at MLB.com/Sprint.

Starting rosters will be announced during the 2010 All-Star Game Selection Show on TBS on July 4. Baseball fans around the world will then be able to select the final player on each team via the 2010 All-Star Game Final Vote sponsored by Sprint.

And the voting doesn't end there. Fans will have the opportunity to participate in the official voting for the Ted Williams Most Valuable Player Award presented by Chevrolet at the Midsummer Classic via the 2010 All-Star Game MVP Vote sponsored by Sprint.

The All-Star Game will be televised nationally by FOX and around the world by Major League Baseball International. ESPN Radio will provide exclusive national radio play-by-play, while MLB.com will offer extensive online coverage.

As for Rios' present resume, the right-handed hitter sits fourth among AL outfielders with 13 home runs and 46 runs scored. He's tied for sixth among outfielders with 20 stolen bases, but has emerged as the only outfielder with double-digit home run and stolen base totals. Rios' .553 slugging percentage ranks him third in the AL outfield and he also features a .317 average.

Konerko, meanwhile, falls second among AL first basemen behind Detroit's Miguel Cabrera in both home runs (17) and RBIs (51). The .296 hitter joins Cabrera, Minnesota's Justin Morneau, Boston's Kevin Youkilis and Kansas City's Billy Butler as this year's healthy elite hitters at this particular position.

In-stadium voting began at U.S. Cellular Field on May 3 and ends this Wednesday night, June 23, the latest for any ballpark in Baseball.

But back to the original White Sox All-Star premise, regarding Santos being selected. The story value increases when considering the talented hurler with the 99-mph fastball and 28 strikeouts originally hails from Bellflower, California, and currently resides in Gilbert, California.

"I think it would be incredible to play in a game like that one, just because it's in Anaheim, just 20 or 30 minutes away from where I grew up," said Santos during a recent interview. "Obviously, it would be a dream come true, and it would be another good story to an unbelievable year.

"Really, I'm just worried about our team winning, and I'm taking this whole year as whatever happens, happens. Rios is having a good year. [Matt] Thornton is amazing. There's a pretty good group that has a chance of going there. Hopefully they do take a couple of guys from our team to represent the White Sox."

Truth be told, White Sox pitchers Freddy Garcia, J.J. Putz, John Danks and Thornton also deserve All-Star consideration. It's just that Santos might have the best Midsummer Classic hook.

Why the Sports Marketing 2.0 VIP Summit?
-	Jeremy McPeek, VP Interactive, Phoenix Suns

Keep pace with fans - In the sports-media business money goes where the fans go; and these days more and more sports fans are going digital. Yet even as sports fans adopt new media, many sports properties struggle to keep pace. Sports Marketing 2.0 VIP Summits provide a forum for veteran digital sports people to share best practices and discuss emerging opportunities. Hearing directly from executives with proven track records helps attendees to sort the profitable ideas from the pipe dreams, and refine their own digital strategies to maximize results.
Connect with peers -Most digital sports execs spend thousands of hours online each year trying to stay up to speed with changing technologies. Indeed we can pick up a lot by following experts on Twitter, but even the savviest digital marketing and sales experts will benefit from real-world interaction. That's why we hold these events. Beyond the keynote speakers and panel discussions, VIP Summits provide ample time for attendees to talk with each other. Come early for lunch and stay late for dinner and cocktails. You'll be glad you did.
Keep it real - There are many sports business events that talk about digital business on a macro level, but only Sports Marketing 2.0 Summits focus on day-to-day practical, real-world information. Summit speakers and attendees are directly responsible for selling, managing or developing ways to make more money from digital channels. These people might not be managing P & Ls, but they are orchestrating innovation and managing projects on the bleeding edge of digital sports. These are the people you'll see at Sports 2.0 VIP Summits. Are you one of us? Would you like to be?
"...There are lots of sports conferences out there, but the Sports 2.0 events have a more collaborative, inventive feel to them. THe mix of established, industry leaders and young, emerging companies fosers the perfect environment for anyone who wants to know how to be a great marketer in the constantly changing sports segment"

Panel Discussions
Sports Marketing 2.0 VIP Summit New York will feature three panel discussions. Our panelists come from a wide array of sports properties, sponsor brands, agencies and digital media companies. Here is a brief overview of what we are planning:

Panel #1: Creating a profitable digital strategy
The digital landscape is vast and ever changing, but one thing remains true for most sports properties: the Website is the central platform from which most business flows. But while many sports properties have built large audiences, most are struggling to make significant money from their sites. To address this challenge, our first panel will focus on sports Websites and explore the inter-relationships between content, traffic and revenue. This discussion will produce some of our most compelling conversation as we seek to pin down practical ideas for:
Attracting and engaging fans via your Website
Converting Web visitors into ticket buyers
Building digital partnerships with sponsors
Internal issues: which department should own the Web
Panelists:
Kirsten Corio, Senior Director, Team Marketing & Business Operations, NBA
Lisa Valentino, VP Digital Sales, ESPN
Herbie Calves, Vice President of Marketing, Timex
Kyle Ragsdale, Vice President, Business Affairs, SB Nation
James McDermott, Global Head of Business Development & Strategy, Webtrends
Panel #2: Social Media in Sports
As sports fans flock to social media, sponsors want to be there too. Not surprisingly, ad spending in social media is growing faster than any other segment. This panel will uncover ways to leverage social in order to engage fans, strengthen the sports brand, and create partnerships with sponsors. There is not enough time in the day to discuss all the myriad opportunities in the social arena, so we will focus on like:
Adding social features & applications to your Website
Leveraging Facebook & Twitter
Managing fan communities
Building partnerships with sponsors
Panelists:
John Demarchi, Vice President, Sponsorships, Saavn.com
David Katz, Founder & CEO, Sportsfanlive
Alex Blum, CEO, KickApps
Scott Richman, SVP & GM, MSG Interactive
Panel #3: Mobile Marketing in Sports
For years we have watched with interest the way Asians and Europeans have adopted mobile into all areas of their lives. It is looking like 2010 will be the beginning of a new wave of mobile mania here in the U.S. This panel will demonstrate how some of the world's leading sports properties and sponsor brands are using mobile in sports today, and it will offer a sneak peak of some of the very real things that are just around the corner. You can expect this panel to cover things like:
Engaging fans at the arena and beyond
Building mobile platforms for sponsorship
Integrating media and event marketing via mobile
Exploring the next wave of mobile opportunities
Panelists:
Bryon Morrison, President, Ipsh! (Mobile unit of the Marketing Arm)
Ian Hall, Group Director, Consulting, Octagon
Joe Dupriest, Director of Marketing, Washington Capitals
Tom Richardson, President, Convergence Sports & Media LLC

Martínez faced only one three-ball count.

Opposing pitcher Mike Morgan was perfect through five full innings, the latest the opposing starter in a perfect game has remained perfect. Two days earlier, Expos pitcher Mark Gardner no-hit the Dodgers through nine innings but lost the no-hitter in the 10th, meaning the Expos narrowly missed throwing a no-hitter and a perfect game in the same series. Deninis Martínez's catcher, Ron Hassey, also caught Len Barker's perfect game.
MLB The Perfect Game Major League Baseball - A perfect game is defined by Major League Baseball as a game in which a pitcher (or combination of pitchers) pitches a victory that lasts a minimum of nine innings and in which no opposing player reaches base. Thus, the pitcher (or pitchers) cannot allow any hits, walks, hit batsmen, or any opposing player to reach base safely for any other reason—in short, "27 up, 27 down". The feat has been achieved only 18 times in the history of major league baseball—16 times since the modern era began in 1900.

By definition, a perfect game must be both a no-hitter and a shutout. Since the pitcher cannot control whether or not his teammates commit any errors, the pitcher must be backed up by solid fielding to pitch a perfect game. An error that does not allow a baserunner, such as a misplayed foul ball, does not spoil a perfect game. Weather-shortened contests in which a team has no baserunners and games in which a team reaches first base only in extra innings do not qualify as official perfect games under the present definition. The first confirmed use of the term "perfect game" was in 1908; the current official definition of the term was formalized in 1991. Although it is possible for multiple pitchers to combine for a perfect game (as has happened nine times at the major league level for a no-hitter), to date, every major league perfect game has been thrown by a single pitcher

The stadium, built for $35,000, was located across the New York, New Haven and Hartford Railroad tracks from the South End Grounds, home of the Boston Braves.

The stadium was the site of the first World Series game between the modern American and National leagues in 1903, and also saw the first perfect game in the modern era, thrown by Cy Young on May 5, 1904. The playing field was built on a former circus lot and was fairly large by modern standards-530 feet to center field, later expanded to 635 feet in 1908. It had many quirks not seen in modern baseball stadiums, including patches of sand in the outfield where grass would not grow, and a tool shed in deep center field that was actually in play.
1903 Boston vs Chicago at Huntington Avenue Grounds

The Huntington Avenue Grounds was demolished after the Red Sox left at the beginning of the 1912 season to play at Fenway Park. Solomon Court at Cabot Center, an indoor athletic venue belonging to Northeastern University, now stands on Huntington Grounds footprint. A plaque and a statue of Cy Young was erected in 1993 where the pitchers mound and home plate used to be, commemorating the history of this ballpark in what is now called World Series Way. Meanwhile, a plaque on the side of the Cabot Center (1956) marks the former location of the left field foul pole. Also, The World Series Exhibit Room in Cabot Physical Education Center is devoted to mementos of the 1901-1911 Red Sox era.
