Kevin Maas Baseball History in 1990

Kevin Maas etched his name in baseball history in 1990. This summer, Maas will travel to the home of baseball history for the inaugural Hall of Fame Classic.

On Father's Day, Maas will test out his home-run swing when he suits up for the Classic at Doubleday Field. In 1990 with the New York Yankees, the left-handed Maas hit his 10th career home run in just his 77th career at-bat. That made him the fastest rookie in history to reach that mark.

Maas will be a part of a star-studded roster at the June 21 Classic. The first-ever Classic Weekend will feature Hall of Famers Bob Feller, Ferguson Jenkins, Paul Molitor, Brooks Robinson and Phil Niekro, along with 20 other former Major League stars in a seven-inning exhibition game, with first pitch slated for 2 p.m. The game will be preceded by the Cooperstown Game Day Parade at noon and a hitting contest featuring several former Major Leaguers at 1 p.m.

The inaugural Baseball Hall of Fame Classic is co-organized by the National Baseball Hall of Fame and Museum and the Major League Baseball Players Alumni Association. Ford Motor Company will be the presenting sponsor of the inaugural Classic. Additional support for the Classic is provided by Otsego County Tourism and Brand Affinity Technologies.

Tickets for the June 21 Baseball Hall of Fame Classic are now on sale to the general public via telephone and at the Museum Store in Cooperstown. Fans can call 1-888-Hall-of-Fame between 9 a.m. and 5 p.m. weekdays to order seats for the Classic.

Tickets are $12.50 for first and third base seats, and $11 for outfield seats. Ticket purchases are subject to a $3.50 handling fee per ticket, unless purchased at the Museum. A six-ticket maximum will apply.

Maas finished second behind Sandy Alomar Jr. in the 1990 American League Rookie of the Year Award voting. He played for five seasons for the Yankees and Minnesota Twins, mostly as a designated hitter, and finished with a career batting average of .230 with 169 RBIs and 287 hits.

The 20 other recently retired players already committed to participate in the Classic include former Major Leaguers John Doherty, George Foster, Bobby Grich, Johnny Grubb, Jim Hannan, Jim Kaat, Joe Lahoud, Bill Lee, Steve Lyons, Mike Pagliarulo, Ron Robinson, Steve Rogers, Lee Smith, Anthony Telford, Mike Timlin and Jon Warden. Additional participants will be announced throughout the spring.
