Derek Jeter 2500 Career Hits August 2008
Derek Jeter went 1-for-5 in a win over the Baltimore Orioles Friday and recorded his 2,500th career hit. The Yankee shortstop has played his entire 14-year career with New York. He is the 88th player in history to achieve this feat.
The last player to reach 2,500 was teammate Ivan "Pudge" Rodriguez, who reached the milestone on April 9th with the Detroit Tigers. He is now No. 75 on the all-time list with 2,593. Frank Thomas is the next closest active player to 2,500 hits. He has 2,460 at age 40 and in his 19th Major League season.
The record for most career hits is held by Pete Rose who had 4,256. Hall of Famer Ty Cobb is second with 4,189. These are the only two players with more than 4,000 hits in their career. Cobb achieved his 2,500th hit in 1918 when he was 31, and Jeter is behind that pace.
Rose, however, recorded his 2,500th hit late in the 1975 season at the age of 34, the same age Jeter is now. Rose played 24 seasons into 1986 when he was 45 years old. He recorded hit No. 4,000 at age 43.
At his current pace, Jeter would record his 3,000th career hit early in the 2011 season.
Jeter ranks third on the all-time Yankee hit list. Only Hall of Famers Babe Ruth and Lou Gehrig have had more hits in pinstripes. With 1,252 hits in Yankee Stadium, Jeter is only 17 away from Gehrig, who has the most hits in the historic ballpark.
Jeter has a .316 career batting average and a .975 fielding percentage. He has won three Gold Glove Awards, two Silver Slugger Awards, and was the 1996 Rookie of the Year. In 2000, he was the MVP of the All-Star Game and the World Series. He has four World Series rings and has been named to nine All-Star Games including starting the 2008 game at Yankee Stadium.
