Felicidades a Sergio Santos Chicago White Sox

By Scott Merkin / MLB.com CHICAGO -- If Major League Baseball is looking for a true Hollywood dream story for its 2010 All-Star Game to be played in Anaheim on Tues., July 13, just a few miles away from Disneyland, then simply focus upon White Sox reliever Sergio Santos.

Yes, Santos has no record over 26 games and has thrown just 21 2/3 innings. Yes, quality setup men are rarely taken for the Midsummer Classic, let alone a pitcher who has spent most of his season in middle relief such as Santos. And yes, a recent rough outing in Pittsburgh elevated Santos' ERA to 2.49.

Nonetheless, the converted infielder working in just his 14th month as a professional pitcher stands as one of the American League's great unsung success stories and as an important cog to the White Sox top-notch bullpen. Fans can't cast their votes for pitchers, though, so White Sox supporters need to focus on helping their deserving position players on the ballot receive recognition such as center fielder Alex Rios and first baseman Paul Konerko.

Rios sits just outside the Top 15 among outfielders in this latest round of online voting released on Monday, while Konerko didn't quite crack the Top 5 at a loaded first base position featuring three players with at least 1,425,000 votes. There's still time for the White Sox faithful to lend a helping hand toward a duo playing a key role in the team's recent 10-1 run over the past 11 games.

Fans can cast their votes for starters up to 25 times at MLB.com and all 30 club sites using the 2010 All-Star Game MLB.com Ballot sponsored by Sprint until July 1 at 10:59 p.m. CT. Sprint subscribers can now vote on the go with select Sprint devices. They can learn more about how to vote on their smart phones at MLB.com/Sprint.

Starting rosters will be announced during the 2010 All-Star Game Selection Show on TBS on July 4. Baseball fans around the world will then be able to select the final player on each team via the 2010 All-Star Game Final Vote sponsored by Sprint.

And the voting doesn't end there. Fans will have the opportunity to participate in the official voting for the Ted Williams Most Valuable Player Award presented by Chevrolet at the Midsummer Classic via the 2010 All-Star Game MVP Vote sponsored by Sprint.

The All-Star Game will be televised nationally by FOX and around the world by Major League Baseball International. ESPN Radio will provide exclusive national radio play-by-play, while MLB.com will offer extensive online coverage.

As for Rios' present resume, the right-handed hitter sits fourth among AL outfielders with 13 home runs and 46 runs scored. He's tied for sixth among outfielders with 20 stolen bases, but has emerged as the only outfielder with double-digit home run and stolen base totals. Rios' .553 slugging percentage ranks him third in the AL outfield and he also features a .317 average.

Konerko, meanwhile, falls second among AL first basemen behind Detroit's Miguel Cabrera in both home runs (17) and RBIs (51). The .296 hitter joins Cabrera, Minnesota's Justin Morneau, Boston's Kevin Youkilis and Kansas City's Billy Butler as this year's healthy elite hitters at this particular position.

In-stadium voting began at U.S. Cellular Field on May 3 and ends this Wednesday night, June 23, the latest for any ballpark in Baseball.

But back to the original White Sox All-Star premise, regarding Santos being selected. The story value increases when considering the talented hurler with the 99-mph fastball and 28 strikeouts originally hails from Bellflower, California, and currently resides in Gilbert, California.

"I think it would be incredible to play in a game like that one, just because it's in Anaheim, just 20 or 30 minutes away from where I grew up," said Santos during a recent interview. "Obviously, it would be a dream come true, and it would be another good story to an unbelievable year.

"Really, I'm just worried about our team winning, and I'm taking this whole year as whatever happens, happens. Rios is having a good year. [Matt] Thornton is amazing. There's a pretty good group that has a chance of going there. Hopefully they do take a couple of guys from our team to represent the White Sox."

Truth be told, White Sox pitchers Freddy Garcia, J.J. Putz, John Danks and Thornton also deserve All-Star consideration. It's just that Santos might have the best Midsummer Classic hook.
