Baseball HOF Honor Harmon Killebrew
National Baseball Hall of Fame and Museum Cooperstown, N.Y. Sept 2009 - Harmon Killebrew was a "Killer" at the plate, off the field and in the game of life, Harmon Killebrew remains one of baseball's true gentlemen and most compassionate figures. At the second annual Character and Courage Weekend in Cooperstown, baseball fans will have the chance to experience those qualities first-hand.
To celebrate Killebrew's character and courage on and off the field, the National Baseball Hall of Fame and Museum will honor the legacy of the former Senators, Twins and Royals star during a special Columbus Day weekend edition of the Voices of the Game series in Cooperstown. Killebrew, a 1984 Hall of Fame inductee, will share his insights on the game at 2 p.m.on Saturday, Oct. 10, in the Hall of Fame's Grandstand Theater. In addition, 30-year participants of the Hall of Fame's Membership program will be recognized, highlighting a daylong salute to these timeless themes.
A ticket is required for the event and costs $10 for adults and $5 for children under 12. Tickets are available to participants in the Hall of Fame's Membership program immediately by calling 607-547-0397, and any remaining tickets will go on sale to the general public on Monday, Oct. 5.
Killebrew, a 13-time All-Star, finished his career with 573 home runs, which is 10th-best all time. He was named the American League's Most Valuable Player in 1969 and hit the most homers of any Major League player over the course of the 1960s.
Last year, the Hall of Fame dedicated the Character and Courage statues in the Museum's foyer. The statues, which depict Hall of Famers Roberto Clemente, Lou Gehrig and Jackie Robinson, celebrate character and courage in baseball and in life, reflecting the achievements of Clemente, Gehrig and Robinson as beacons of these characteristics. Made possible through a gift of Hall of Fame supporter Bob Crotty, the statues are a permanent Museum exhibit.
